WV Case Study_2024-2045-Mid-Atlantic-Drought-Assessment-Report (1)_Page_01.pngIn the 2024–2025 Mid-Atlantic Drought Assessment, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recognized West Virginia's Drought Task Force as a standout example of effective drought management and a model of effective multi-agency coordination and data-driven response.

Key Highlights of NOAA's Assessment:

  • The Task Force launched a multi-agency management meeting and public-awareness campaign using the National Drought Mitigation Center's reporting tool, encouraging residents to help farmers by submitting real-time drought impacts.
  • A network of 256 meteorological gauges, jointly maintained by WVEMD, USGS, NOAA, and private partners, provided vital rainfall, temperature, humidity, and stream-level data—enabling more informed decision-making.
  • The State of West Virginia established a drought relief reimbursement grant program that supported local agencies—like fire departments—in securing water for irrigation and livestock.

The recognition reflects the Task Force's proactive efforts in public outreach, monitoring, and resource support, reinforcing West Virginia's commitment to resilience in the face of drought.
