Residents of Mercer County affected by the impacts of Post-Tropical Storm Helene from September 25–28, 2024, are eligible to apply for assistance.
CHARLESTON, WV—The West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD), in coordination with the Office of Governor Jim Justice, is pleased to announce that Mercer County residents impacted by the severe storms on September 25–28, 2024, may now apply for assistance through
FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program
.
Underscoring the importance of this assistance, Gov. Justice said, “This federal declaration will bring much-needed relief to our residents and communities in Mercer County as they recover from the impacts of Post-Tropical Storm Helene. I urge anyone affected to apply for assistance and take advantage of the resources now available.”
This declaration provides federal disaster assistance to support recovery efforts in Mercer County, which was significantly affected by the storm.
“This disaster declaration is a critical step in helping the people of Mercer County recover,” said WVEMD Director GE McCabe. “I’m incredibly proud of our local partners and dedicated staff for their hard work and commitment to ensuring these communities get the support they need during a challenging time.”
Federal aid includes:
Grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and other needs.
Low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses.
Additional programs to assist individuals and businesses in their recovery.
Federal funding is also available statewide on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation projects to strengthen resilience against future disasters.
While grateful for the federal disaster assistance provided, the State of West Virginia is hopeful that Raleigh County will also be included in the declaration. FEMA has advised that the Raleigh County portion of the original request remains under review.
FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams will be in Mercer County beginning December 13, 2024 to provide help to people affected by Tropical Storm Helene.
How to Apply for FEMA Assistance
Individuals and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance at
DisasterAssistance.gov
, by calling 1-800-621-3362 or by using the FEMA App. If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA the number for that service.
