Things to consider:

Food Banks: Large-scale non-profit organizations that receive and distribute food to food pantries. West Virginia has two food banks, Facing Hunger and Mountaineer Food Bank, both affiliates of Feeding America.

Food Pantry: A distribution center where hungry families can receive food. Supplied with food from a food bank, pantries come in all shapes and sizes – but the most important thing is they are part of their community. Pantries run on volunteers and work hard to meet the needs of their neighbors.

Mobile Pantry: Pantries that bring food and groceries to a community, usually once or twice a month. These are often run by the food banks and include pre-packaged grocery boxes.

Food: While “Food” seems like a simple term, it can mean groceries, a baggie of snacks, and even a hot meal. When searching for resources, make sure to look at what a group offers to see if it meets your needs!

POP-UP Sites: Temporary or one-time food distribution locations. Sometime used to mean mobile pantry, but more often used when an event is not pre-coordinated in advance. Used during emergencies.

W.Va. Guard Announces Food Information for Nov. 7-9

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – At the direction of Governor Patrick Morrisey, the West Virginia National Guard continues supporting food banks, food pantries, and state agencies with logistics and distribution efforts to ensure vital assistance continues despite disruptions.

The WVNG ensured all pantry requests are met this weekend by coordinating with Facing Hunger and Mountaineer Food Bank, who have increased deliveries to maintain continuous support. The WVNG planned to deliver 28 pallets/56,000lbs of food today to 12 different locations but the food banks provided an additional 12 pallets for a total of 40 pallets and 80,000lbs.

Community pantries that received the Governor's additional funds have begun shopping for additional needs to fill any gaps. This money is meant to go into local grocery and retail stores, bolstering local economy.

With the ongoing federal government shutdown and uncertainty surrounding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, West Virginia 211 is serving as a lifeline for families facing food insecurity across the Mountain State. As the state’s most comprehensive and up-to-date resource database, West Virginia 211 is ensuring residents can access real, verified information on where to find help — including food pantries, meal sites, and other basic needs resources.

Powered by the United Way network, West Virginia 211 is operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Residents can call 2-1-1 or text their ZIP code to 898-211 to connect with trained Community Resource Specialists.
